Granville Sharp deceased.
REP
(REU 26 AFR 19
Matilda Hospital Site.
As the Trustees of the Will of the late Mr. Granville
Sharp and as the registered Owners of the land forming the site
of the above Hospital we beg to address you with regard to com-
-munications which have passed between our Agents and the Land
Officer on the subject of the amalgamation of the several Lots
forming the site of the Hospital into one Lot, of which amalga-
-mation we understand His Excellency the Governor has signified
his approval,
In order to carry out such amalgamation it is proposed
that the Trustees shall execute formal surrenders of the exis-
-ting leases and that a new lease of the whole site (to be known
as Rural Building Lot 16) shall be granted to them, such new
lease to be for 75 years (as were the old leases) and to commerce
from 23rd. November 1882.
As His Excellency is (no doubt) aware, the Trustees of
Mr. Granville Sharp's Will have expended in the acquisition of
this site and in the erection and equipment of the Hospital
(including the recent addition thereto) a total sum of about
6 lake of dollars, and a Scheme for the management of the
Hospital was last year submitted to and received the sanction
of the Supreme Court of Hongkong (Copies of the printed Scheme
were subsequently furnished to you).
The Trgutees feel very strongly that having regard to
the character of the buildings erected and the objects of the
Institution it is eminently a case where the property should be
vested in the Trustees in perpetuity (as nearly as the nature
of the tenure of the land will admit) and that therefore they
may reasonably ask that the new lease should be not for 75 years
but for 999 years.
